Direct answer

What should a 2027 brand strategy include?

A 2027 brand strategy should define a distinctive market position, align leadership around a usable narrative, convert subject-matter expertise into an evidence-led content system, make the organization discoverable across search and AI, and measure how brand activity changes demand, trust, stakeholder action, and commercial outcomes. The strategy should also establish governance, decision rights, and an activation roadmap that internal teams and external partners can operate together.

#1

Branding ranked first among 20 CMO priorities in McKinsey's study.[1]

70/30

70% call AI leadership critical; 30% report mature AI readiness.[3]

60%

of U.S. adults say they read AI summaries in search results.[10]

11%

of B2B thought leadership programs rate advanced or leading.[6]

Executive brief

What should leadership carry into 2027 planning?

The research points to five decisions. Each one changes how a CMO should write the brief, fund the work, and evaluate a partner.

1. Fund brand and its proof system together

A positioning statement creates direction. Content, experiences, executive voices, third-party evidence, and consistent delivery create belief. Separating strategy from activation weakens the investment case.

2. Treat AI efficiency as capacity

Use saved time for research, original analysis, creative exploration, audience understanding, and expert participation. More output without sharper judgment increases sameness.

3. Build for cumulative influence

Buyers and stakeholders form views across several interactions. The brand system should coordinate the sequence, from first answer to final reassurance, instead of optimizing isolated assets.

4. Measure memory, behavior, and value

Brand awareness alone cannot carry the board conversation. Pair it with qualified demand, stakeholder movement, search and AI presence, conversion, retention, pricing confidence, and operating efficiency.

5. Shortlist partners for connected capability

The 2027 requirement spans strategy, research, content, creative, discovery, measurement, and governance. A partner can cover all of it or work within a coordinated model. The brief should name ownership and handoffs before procurement starts.

The planning reset

Why does 2027 brand planning require a different operating model?

Brand has returned to the top of the CMO agenda. The management systems around it have not caught up.

McKinsey's State of Marketing Europe 2026 research placed branding first among 20 CMO priorities. Marketing leaders emphasized distinctiveness, a clear value proposition, creativity, authenticity, and trust. The same study found generative and agentic AI ranked seventeenth, even though half of CMOs described AI-enabled marketing as one of the three fastest-growing investment areas.[1]

That apparent contradiction is useful. Leaders understand the need for a stronger brand, while AI investment often arrives through tools, pilots, and production workflows. The work meets in the content system. AI can create more variants, compress research time, personalize messages, and speed testing. The brand strategy decides which ideas deserve scale, what evidence carries authority, and where automation should stop.

Measurement creates the harder constraint. Gartner found 84% of companies in its study caught in a cycle of underfunded measurement, unclear brand impact, greater skepticism, and tighter budgets. Those companies were half as likely to exceed growth targets as organizations able to evaluate brand value. Gartner predicts that by 2027, more than 40% of CMOs seeking larger brand budgets will lose C-suite influence when they cannot demonstrate sufficient returns.[2]

Gigawatt Group's perspective

The 2027 brand plan should begin with a value architecture. Define how stronger positioning changes memory, discovery, preference, stakeholder behavior, pipeline, retention, or mission outcomes. Then fund the creative and content system that can produce those changes.

Budget pressure sharpens the decision. Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey put marketing budgets at 7.8% of company revenue. Fifty-six percent of CMOs said their organizations lacked the budget to deliver the strategy, while 54% reported insufficient resources.[3] A credible plan needs a stop-doing list. Low-value content, duplicate agency scopes, unused platforms, and reporting that never changes a decision all compete with the brand investment.

Original framework

What is a brand memory system?

A brand memory system coordinates what audiences remember, what the organization can consistently express, and what machines can retrieve about the organization.

Traditional brand projects often produce a set of choices: purpose, position, promise, personality, message pillars, visual cues, and architecture. Those choices remain essential. The 2027 operating challenge is persistence. The choices must survive a board presentation, a policy response, a sales conversation, an AI-generated summary, a regional campaign, a subject-matter interview, and hundreds of daily content decisions.

Layer 01

Human memory

The associations, cues, emotions, facts, and experiences people can recall when they encounter a need, issue, or decision.

Layer 02

Organizational memory

The approved narrative, evidence, language, assets, decisions, and workflows that let teams express the brand with consistency.

Layer 03

Machine memory

The public facts, entities, passages, sources, and relationships that search and AI systems can discover, interpret, and reuse.

Kantar's BrandZ model gives the human layer a disciplined foundation: Meaning, Difference, and Salience. Its 2026 methodology combines financial analysis with brand equity measures built from more than 4.6 million consumer interviews across 54 markets.[8] The lesson for a CMO is straightforward. Reach can support salience. Relevance can support meaning. A specific, defensible point of view creates difference. Each requires creative and operational follow-through.

The organizational layer is where many strategies decay. Teams use different descriptions of the business, old proof remains in decks, experts rarely contribute, and campaign briefs recreate the same decisions. A message architecture, evidence library, editorial governance process, and decision log turn strategy into working memory.

The machine layer makes those same inconsistencies public. Search engines and AI systems retrieve information from websites, news, databases, video, forums, profiles, and third-party publications. A clear brand entity, connected topic architecture, crawlable evidence, consistent facts, and credible external references improve the likelihood that machines can describe the organization accurately. Gigawatt Group's generative engine optimization services address this discovery layer within a broader authority system.

The model works only when the three layers reinforce one another. A memorable campaign with weak organizational governance becomes inconsistent. A detailed knowledge base with no distinctive position becomes interchangeable. A machine-readable website without human value becomes easy to retrieve and easy to ignore.

Content economics

How is AI changing content strategy for 2027?

AI has lowered the cost of producing a plausible asset. It has raised the value of original evidence, editorial judgment, expert participation, and recognizable brand expression.

The Content Marketing Institute and MarketingProfs surveyed 1,015 B2B marketers for their 2026 report. Ninety-five percent said their organizations used AI-powered marketing applications. Among teams using AI for content creation, 87% reported productivity gains and 80% reported greater operational efficiency. The gains fell to 65% for creative capability, 58% for content quality, and 39% for content performance.[6]

The chart changes the content brief. Faster production is a capacity gain. Quality and performance still require a point of view, a real audience problem, credible evidence, thoughtful distribution, and a connection to business action. The CMI study found effective teams most often credited content relevance and quality (65%) and team skills and capabilities (53%) for improved effectiveness. Technology and tools ranked below both at 43%.[6]

The same study found 96% of B2B marketers produced thought leadership, yet only 11% rated their programs advanced or leading. Sixty-seven percent said fewer than 15% of employees with specialized knowledge actively contributed. That gap is the 2027 opening. An organization already employs the experience, data, and judgment competitors cannot reproduce. The content operating model has to extract it without turning every expert into a full-time writer.

Content also reaches decision-makers who remain invisible to the marketing funnel. Edelman and LinkedIn found 91% of hidden B2B buyers were more receptive to sales and marketing outreach from companies that consistently produced high-quality thought leadership; 79% were more likely to advocate for the company inside the buying group.[14] For leadership teams, this makes executive content part of brand and buying-group strategy, with a role well before a formal RFP appears.

The content portfolio should move from volume to evidence density

Give each priority asset a specific claim, named source, expert observation, practical framework, and next decision. Use AI for acceleration around that substance, with human accountability for the argument and final form.

A mature content marketing system connects audience research, topic architecture, editorial development, expert interviews, creative formats, search intent, distribution, and reporting. For firms with defined account lists and complex buying groups, selected assets can also support account-based marketing programs through role-specific evidence and sales enablement.

The supplied Digital Applied compilation reports that 67% of content marketers use AI tools daily while 19% track AI-specific KPIs.[12] The page does not present a source-level methodology beside those figures, so this report treats them as directional. Stronger primary research independently supports the underlying concern: AI adoption and output are advancing faster than content performance measurement.

Attention and trust

How should brands earn attention without exhausting their audiences?

The 2027 plan needs a sequence of useful interactions. Repetition should reinforce an idea; frequency alone creates fatigue.

Adobe's 2026 consumer research, based on 4,000 respondents, found 69% said brands had five seconds or less to capture attention in a promotional email, advertisement, or social post. Twelve percent felt ready to purchase after one personalized interaction, while three to five interactions influenced buying decisions for 40%. Nearly half, 45%, said they were likely to stop interacting with a brand that sent too many promotions, even when the content was relevant.[7]

69%

say brands have five seconds or less to earn attention.

40%

say three to five interactions influence a buying decision.

45%

may disengage when promotion volume becomes excessive.

For an executive team, this argues for message architecture and journey design. One strong idea can unfold through an executive article, a research chart, a sales brief, a member email, a policy explainer, a video, and a stakeholder conversation. Each format performs a different job while reinforcing the same memory.

Trust adds another layer inside the Beltway. Edelman's 2026 Trust Barometer found 70% of U.S. respondents unwilling or hesitant to trust people with different values, social views, backgrounds, or information sources.[9] A broad message may travel across fragmented communities, but it will not land the same way. Brand strategy should establish a consistent core and give teams room to adapt proof, language, messenger, and context for each audience.

That matters for associations balancing member segments, nonprofits speaking to donors and communities, public affairs teams addressing policymakers and constituents, and professional services firms building confidence across partners, buyers, and referral networks. Consistency should protect the promise. Adaptation should increase relevance.

Search and AI discovery

How should brand strategy account for search and AI answers?

Discovery systems increasingly summarize the market before a buyer reaches a website. Brand strategy has to shape the public evidence those systems can retrieve.

Pew Research Center found 60% of U.S. adults said they read AI summaries at the top of search results, based on a February 2026 survey of 5,119 adults. About four in ten also said they used chatbots to search for information.[10] These behaviors move brand evaluation into generated answers, often before a direct session begins.

Another Pew analysis of 68,879 Google searches found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it did not. A link inside the AI summary received a click in 1% of visits. Government sites accounted for 6% of AI-summary sources and 2% of standard-result sources in the dataset, a relevant detail for Washington organizations with authoritative public information.[11]

The implication is larger than traffic loss. A brand can influence a decision through accurate inclusion, a supporting citation, a distinctive claim, or a trusted third-party source even when the user never visits. Measurement should separate visibility, citation, narrative accuracy, branded demand, engaged traffic, and downstream action.

Google's official guidance reinforces a durable approach. The company recommends unique, non-commodity, people-first content and says foundational SEO practices remain relevant to generative search. It also says there is no special AI schema required and warns against inauthentic mentions or rewriting content solely for AI systems.[13]

Brand strategy provides the semantic control layer

Clear positioning tells people and machines what the organization should be known for. Content and external evidence make that position verifiable. Technical SEO makes the evidence accessible. Ongoing monitoring shows where the public narrative remains incomplete or inaccurate.

Executive measurement

How should CMOs measure brand strategy in 2027?

Use a measurement stack that connects memory and trust to observable behavior, business value, and operating health.

A single brand score compresses too much. A dashboard with dozens of unrelated metrics creates a different failure. The useful middle is a small set of measures connected by an explicit theory of change.

Five-layer brand value measurement stack
LayerExecutive questionExample measuresDecision supported
Memory and meaningAre priority audiences remembering the right idea?Awareness, association, message recall, consideration, trust, differentiationPositioning and creative allocation
Discovery and authorityDoes the brand appear where audiences form a view?Non-brand search presence, AI mentions, citations, share of answer, media and research referencesContent, SEO, GEO, and authority investment
Engagement and movementAre people taking the next useful step?Qualified engagement, return visits, content sequences, event actions, member or donor activityJourney and channel design
Commercial or mission valueWhat organizational outcome changed?Pipeline, win rate, price realization, retention, membership, fundraising, recruitment, policy or stakeholder actionBudget and portfolio choices
Operating healthCan the organization sustain the system?Approval time, expert participation, asset reuse, production cost, content quality, governance exceptionsTeam, partner, and workflow design

Gartner's 2026 research adds a warning about optimization bias. Awareness and conversion together accounted for 62.6% of total media spend, while loyalty and retention fell below 15%. The most AI-mature organizations allocated a larger share to loyalty and retention, suggesting that less mature teams may overinvest in stages that are easiest to automate and measure.[4]

Brand measurement should therefore preserve long-term value signals alongside near-term demand. For a professional services firm, that could mean branded search, proposal invitations, shortlist rate, win rate, and referral strength. For an association, member retention, policy engagement, event participation, and share of voice may matter more. A nonprofit may prioritize donor quality, volunteer conversion, message trust, and program participation. The framework stays stable; the outcome definitions change.

Agree on baselines and reporting cadence before launch. Assign an owner to each metric. Record the decision a metric can change. If nobody can name the decision, the measure belongs in an analyst's appendix rather than the executive dashboard.

Washington, DC lens

What does the 2027 brand shift mean inside the Beltway?

Washington organizations operate in markets where reputation, policy, expertise, and stakeholder confidence frequently shape demand before a formal buying process begins.

Associations and membership organizations

Build a unifying position across members with different priorities. Turn policy expertise, convening power, standards, data, and member outcomes into a visible evidence portfolio. Measure member value and influence alongside reach.

Nonprofits and mission-driven organizations

Connect mission language to the specific decisions donors, volunteers, partners, communities, and boards make. Protect dignity and trust in AI-assisted workflows. Use content to show program logic and real-world impact.

Public affairs and policy teams

Define the narrative before an issue accelerates. Create clear facts, source pathways, spokesperson roles, and rapid-response governance. Monitor how search and AI answers frame the issue across national, state, and local contexts.

Professional services and government contractors

Translate expertise into a differentiated point of view buyers can evaluate before a conversation. Connect executive content, case evidence, procurement language, search visibility, and account-level activation.

Regulated and high-trust organizations

Design governance around accuracy, privacy, accessibility, substantiation, and review authority. Build a content system that can move at market speed while preserving legal, policy, and reputational controls.

A Washington, DC partner should understand these stakeholder environments without forcing every engagement into a political frame. The strategic requirement is broader: clarify the position, map the audiences, build the evidence, activate the message, and measure the outcome with discipline.

2027 procurement

How should CMOs build a brand and content strategy vendor shortlist?

Shortlist partners against the operating problem. Service labels are less useful than evidence of how the firm diagnoses, decides, activates, measures, and transfers capability.

The CMO Survey found companies outsourced 33.6% of digital marketing activities in 2026 and expected that share to reach 34.3% within two years. Yet organizations still allocated 59.5% of new-capability development to internal building, compared with 15.5% to agency partnerships and 12.7% to other consultancies.[5]

That mixed model fits the 2027 need. Internal leaders should own business direction, final brand decisions, institutional knowledge, and long-term stewardship. External partners can add research capacity, facilitation, specialized strategy, content and creative production, discovery expertise, measurement design, and execution bandwidth.

What should the RFP ask?

  • Which business or stakeholder decision will the proposed brand strategy improve?
  • How will the team distinguish genuine audience evidence from stakeholder preference?
  • What choices will the strategy force, and how will disagreement be resolved?
  • How will subject-matter expertise become content without creating unsustainable demands on experts?
  • How will the partner connect brand strategy to organic search, AI discovery, paid activation, sales, member, donor, or policy workflows?
  • Which measures will demonstrate early movement, and which require a longer window?
  • What will the internal team be able to operate independently at the end of the engagement?

A capable partner should also name limitations. Brand research may reveal direction without proving causation. AI visibility is volatile across prompts and platforms. Attribution remains partial in long, multi-stakeholder journeys. An honest measurement design makes those constraints explicit and still gives leadership a useful basis for action.

Implementation

What should happen in the first 180 days?

The sequence moves from decision clarity to activation and learning. Timing can compress or expand with stakeholder count, research scope, and governance complexity.

01

Days 1 to 30: Diagnose

Audit current positioning, audience evidence, brand health, message consistency, content performance, search and AI presence, measurement, workflows, and active vendor scopes. Define the decisions the strategy must improve.

02

Days 31 to 60: Decide

Set the position, value proposition, audience priorities, brand architecture, narrative, distinctive proof, and strategic exclusions. Agree on decision rights and executive measures.

03

Days 61 to 90: Build the memory system

Create message architecture, evidence library, expert-capture workflow, editorial priorities, creative system, discovery architecture, governance rules, and reporting definitions.

04

Days 91 to 135: Activate a priority market

Launch the strategy through one meaningful audience, issue, service line, campaign, or account segment. Coordinate owned content, executive voice, creative, search, paid support, sales or stakeholder enablement, and external authority.

05

Days 136 to 180: Learn and scale

Review memory, discovery, engagement, business outcomes, and operating friction. Refine the message, reallocate effort, document the learning, and extend the system to the next priority market.

The CMO Survey found marketing leaders spend 68.2% of their time managing the present and 31.8% preparing for the future.[5] A bounded 180-day program gives future preparation a real operating container while generating visible work early enough to sustain executive support.

Executive summary

What is the 2027 brand strategy mandate?

The 2027 mandate is to make the brand distinctive enough to remember, clear enough to operate, credible enough to trust, and structured enough for search and AI systems to retrieve accurately. That requires choices, evidence, content, creative expression, governance, discovery, and measurement working as one system.

AI changes the economics of execution. It gives capable teams more time and range. It also makes generic output easier for every competitor to produce. The durable advantage comes from market understanding, original perspective, subject-matter expertise, creative judgment, public evidence, and the discipline to connect them to a measurable outcome.

For CMOs and communications leaders building a 2027 shortlist, the strongest partner will understand the whole operating problem and define a realistic role within it. The goal is a brand system the organization can use, learn from, and strengthen over time.
